It’s there he is headed with his camera crew, a conscripted playwright (Adrien Brody) and the lovely Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts)—a Vaudeville actress whose career has experienced a Depression-era slump. As kids growing up in the New York metropolitan area during the 1970s, my brother and I enjoyed a unique Thanksgiving Day tradition that had nothing to do with football or the Macy’s parade. Every year, a local TV station would broadcast King Kong, Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. I would love to go on a picnic with any of James McBride’s characters as much as I would with Fredrik Backman’s or Fannie Flagg’s. Kong devours several of the latter, thus getting himself on the wrong side of the law and insuring that this film’s end will be a repeat of the last one in a more rustic setting.
More than just drum-beating, Kong-worshiping followers of some quirky witchdoctor, these are oppressively dark, vicious, zombie-like natives.
